What did hail and wind reports look like in your county?

Pick your county to see how many hail and severe wind reports NOAA recorded there between July 2024 and June 2026. We kept counts, not a dated list of storms, so the answer tells you how often weather was reported nearby and nothing about what happened to your roof. It runs in your browser and asks for nothing.

Answer the questions

Which county is the roof in?

Twenty Michigan counties are covered. Pick the one on your property tax bill if you are unsure.

What happened?

This only changes where we point you next.

Should I file a claim?

This list uses only facts from the Michigan insurance regulator (DIFS) and the statute. It does not tell you to file or not to file, because that depends on your policy and your repair estimate.

  • Tell your insurer as soon as possibleDIFS's first step after storm damage is to notify your insurance company or agent as soon as possible, and to keep notes of every conversation: date, representative, claim number and a summary. DIFS gives no number of days.
  • Know your deductible before the claim is paidDIFS tells you to know your deductible before payment. Compare the deductible with a written repair estimate before you decide how to proceed.
  • A county record is not damage to your roofA count of reports in your county does not prove anything happened to your roof. Photographs taken before cleanup, and a written inspection from a roofing company, are what show damage on your own house. DIFS also says a homeowners policy covers only the damaged part of a roof, and the insurer is not required to replace the entire roof.
  • Ask how a claim affects your premiumDIFS lists your claim history among the factors in what you pay for home insurance. Ask your agent before you file what a claim could mean for your own policy.
  • Know the one-year limit for a lawsuitUnder MCL 500.2833(1)(q), a lawsuit must start within 1 year after the loss or within the time your policy gives, whichever is longer, and the time stops running from the day you notify the insurer until it formally denies liability. That provision is written for fire policies, so how it applies to a homeowners wind or hail claim is our reading and a question for an attorney.
  • Never let a contractor cover the deductibleDIFS lists a repairman who offers to cover the deductible by raising the estimate or bill as insurance fraud, and Michigan treats it as a felony.

Wayne County: hail and wind reports, Jul 2024 to Jun 2026

Chosen when: Which county is the roof in: Wayne

From July 2024 to June 2026 the NOAA Storm Events database lists 4 hail reports of 1 inch or larger in Wayne County, on 3 distinct days, and the largest hail was 1.25 inches. Several reports share a day, so the day count is the better guide to how often hail was reported. For wind, it lists 29 reports of 50 knots (58 mph) or more on 13 distinct days, and the strongest reading is 66 knots. It also lists 2 tornado reports. Each report is counted separately, so one storm that crosses several places or produces several reports shows up more than once. The newest months are preliminary, and a low count does not mean low risk. We recorded counts rather than a dated list, so this page cannot say which day anything happened, and a report in your county does not show damage to your roof.

Try first: From the ground, photograph any missing or lifted shingles and any damage to gutters, vents or flashing. Do not climb on the roof.

Stop and call someone if: Water is coming in or a ceiling is stained and spreading. Go to emergency repair first and read the record later.

Photograph it from the ground before any cleanup, make only temporary repairs, and tell your insurer. DIFS says to hold off on permanent repairs until the insurer has inspected or tells you to go ahead. Door-to-door offers that follow a storm are a different matter: read the guide before you sign anything.

A leak with no storm behind it

Chosen when: What happened: A leak, and no storm that I know of

Start by finding out where the water comes in. DIFS says standard homeowners policies cover a range of winter problems including ice dams and leaky roofs, and that cause and policy wording decide whether yours does, so read the guide on leaks before you assume either answer.

You are not sure there is anything to find

Chosen when: What happened: I am not sure · or · Any other answers

A roof inspection answers that question with photographs of your own roof. Ask the company for the written findings and keep them: they are worth having whether or not a claim follows. DIFS also says never to feel pressured into an immediate decision.

Roof inspection · How to check a Michigan roofer's license on LARA, and what to do if the work goes wrong

These are counts of reports in a public NOAA database, read for July 2024 to June 2026, the latest 24 months NCEI had published when we pulled them on Oct 19, 2026. Severe wind means 50 knots (58 mph) or more, measured or estimated; hail means 1 inch or larger. A low number does not mean low risk, and the figures say nothing about your roof.
